Jolada rotti or sajje rotti?

Jolada rotti is made from sorghum (jola in Kannada, jowar in Hindi) and is the everyday staple of the north. Sajje rotti is made from pearl millet (sajje in Kannada, bajra in Hindi): it is thicker and earthier, and it is lovely with butter. Neither is made from wheat flour.

What to eat with rotti

Chutney pudi is the classic partner, with a little oil or ghee. See our five chutney pudis. For something sweet at the end of the meal, there is shenga holige.
